Joseph Torella
Joseph Torella currently serves as President of the Employee Benefits Division at HUB International Northeast, a leading insurance brokerage firm, and part of HUB International Limited, ranked as the ninth largest brokerage globally. A 23 year industry veteran, he is responsible for the overall management of the Employee Benefits operations throughout HUB Northeast’s regional offices in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Mr. Torella joined HUB in December 2009.
Prior to joining HUB, he served as Vice President, Business Development with Savoy Associates, a group benefits general agency in New Jersey, since January, 2003 where he was responsible for overseeing a regional office and expansion of the firm in Central and Southern New Jersey and into Pennsylvania.
Throughout his career, he has held a number of other managerial and executive positions for managed care companies and the consulting community, including the following:
- Mr. Torella served as VP of Sales and Marketing for the Northern NJ office of AmeriHealth Insurance Company and AmeriHealth HMO of New Jersey. Prior to his appointment as Vice President, he had been the Director, then Senior Director of Sales and Marketing, having worked for the organization since 1998.
- As Strategic Sales Manager for CIGNA HealthCare, Mr. Torella was responsible for all commercial business statewide and managed a $150,000,000 book of business. He was also responsible for managing the integration process when CIGNA acquired Healthsource.
- Prior to joining CIGNA, Mr. Torella served as the National Director of Marketing and Sales Support for the Strategic Healthcare Practice of Alexander and Alexander (A&A) from 1993 to 1996. Mr. Torella provided consulting, sales, and marketing support to A&A’s regional offices around the country; he also wrote and spoke extensively on the topic of managed care and its impact on the health care industry.
- Earlier in his career, Mr. Torella served within the Blue Cross and Blue Shield System for seven years, most recently with Beacon Corporate Benefit Services (Stamford CT.) as Director of Sales. Prior to his relationship with Beacon, he held several managerial roles for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey.
Mr. Torella is Immediate Past-President of the Central Jersey Association of Health Underwriters and a Past-president of the NJ Association of Health Underwriters – the NJ statewide organization. (He is also a Past-president of the Northern New Jersey Chapter.) He is a long-standing member of the American Marketing Association and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, Inc.
He has been a public speaker and continuing education instructor for the past fifteen years and often speaks on many topics including Consumer-Driven Healthcare, Transparency, Managed Care and related health care trends. He was previously the author with a monthly column in the Financial Advisor.
Mr. Torella earned his MBA and BA Degrees from Rutgers University. He lives with his wife, Fran in North Edison and is an active member of the community and local school organizations. His son, Joseph, lives in Boston, Massachusetts and is working towards his PhD in Systems Biology at Harvard.
